Shelter Dog Stars In Broadway Production Of ‘Annie’

The Broadway production of ‘Annie’ opens tonight with the role of Sandy being played by a terrier mix who was rescued hours before being euthanized. Trainer William Berloni saw online photos of a two-year-old female dog named Sunny while conducting a nationwide search to find the perfect pooch for the part of Sandy.
“Something about her picture appealed to me,” Berloni told ABC News. “We already had three other candidates, but when I met Sunny I thought she’d be a great fit. She’s outgoing, friendly and eager to learn.”
Berloni is passionate about casting rescue dogs. In 1976, he spent $7 to rescue a dog from a shelter one day before it was to be euthanized. The dog went on to play almost all 2,377 Broadway performances of “Annie.”

“The most talented animals are right there under your nose,” he said. “The message is: Animals in shelters are not damaged, just unfortunate.”

Dog food company Pedigree has teamed with the Broadway production of ‘Annie’ to donate $2 for each ticket sold, up to a total of $1 million, through the end of the year to animal-focused nonprofit organizations.
