4 Facts About K9 Veterans Day

Did you know today is K9 Veterans Day? Dogs aren’t just our snuggly companions, they’re also brave and mighty soldiers. Take a moment today to give thanks to the countless number of loyal dogs who’ve given their lives for our nation– and our freedom.

1. The holiday was founded in 1987 by Joseph J. White, a decorated Vietnam War veteran.

2. The date March 13th was selected because March 13, 1942 is the official birthday of the United States K9 Corps.

3. 11 states officially recognize K9 Veterans Day: California, Florida, Kentucky, Michigan, New Jersey, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, West Virginia and South Carolina.

4. The day honors not just military dogs, but also police, Customs, Border Patrol, Secret Service,  F.B.I., therapy and other working dogs.
