Dear Marley,

I used to always see my neighbor walking this beautiful fluffy white dog down the street and the dog just jumping along behind her.  I knew I had to have one for myself!  I have to be honest, I went searching for you at a time when I was lonely – I was in a new place and my significant other worked long hours.   I had a lot of time on my hands.  I scoured the papers for weeks and weeks in February 2006 to find a soft coated wheaton terrier.  One day I opened the paper and there you were!  I drove to this beautiful little town, an hour out of my way, to see you.  You were in a big Victorian house on the lake.  It was so picturesque I almost felt guilty wanting to take you home.  But I could not resist.  You were lying prostrate, legs splayed out like a frog, on the giant air conditioning vent on the floor.  You seemed a little lethargic.  But for some unexplainable reason, I was drawn to you.  You tried to claw your way out of the car on the way home.  So you were not exactly drawn to me on that day, or the next day, or even the next day, but I won you over in the end.  Since that time, you have never left my side.  Picking you was the best decision I’ve ever made.

From that time to now, I have broken up with my significant other, moved to another house, made incredible friends in a new place, and I became the person I always wanted to be – the person I have been growing into my whole life.  We have driven thousands of miles together and you have heard all my deepest secrets. Through it all, you have been the constant reminder that life should not be taken too seriously.  As cliché as it is, I cannot imagine my life without you.

Each time I grab my keys to unlock my door, I know you are waiting impatiently on the other side and that you’ve probably been waiting at the door for hours.  You’ve protected me fiercely at times that I could not protect myself (read: too much alcohol).  Your love has been better than any medicine and stronger than any obstacle I have had to overcome since I met you.  I want to say thank you for being my closest and dearest friend and my most cherished companion.
