Dear Chaska,

You have made my life so wonderful. The first dog in our family didn’t work out and we had to give her away when I was seven and for the next seven years I prayed for a special doggie of my own. When I first met you, you were so tired from your puppy shots that you fell asleep in my lap and I fell in love with you.

Remember potty training? That was really hard. But remember all the times I would throw the ball for you? Those were fun times. Remember the time we had to be separated for a month? I missed you every day and I know you missed me, too. I’m sorry I had to leave – I don’t ever want to do that again.

You have always been the best-behaved dog at the vet and children love petting you. The first baby you met, you licked his fingers and made him laugh. I love showing you off and you like performing all your tricks. Whenever I take you to the dog park, you like running ahead and checking the trail for me – but you always check to make sure I’m following you.

You hog the bed and the chair and lay outside the bathroom door while I shower. But sometimes you get really bored and lick your paws until they are red and I don’t know what to do. You love playing with your sister and you are especially good at sneaking up on her when you think she’s not looking (she always is).

I am so grateful that you are in my life and I tell you that every night before we go to sleep. You are getting on in years, although your energy has yet to diminish. I do not know how much longer we will be together in this life, so I cherish every moment I have with you.

I will always love you, my Chaska-Boy, never forget that.
