Dear Gatsby,

Gatsby

When I watch you rolling on your back in the grass, basking in the sunshine, and when I feel your silky head on the pillow, nuzzling me to sleep, you release me from self-doubt and worry. I must have done something right to deserve a love so pure and enduring. Every day, I thank God for bringing us together.

It pains me to think that you were abandoned and abused as a young dog. Did those people not notice the kindness glimmering in your eyes? Did they not appreciate your silly tricks? Did they not understand that you would willingly sacrifice yourself to protect them?

I notice, appreciate, and understand; you are a four-legged angel.

You kept me safe when I lived in a bad neighborhood. You refused to leave my side when I was sick. You guarded the body of my older dog when he passed in his sleep. You patiently taught my new puppy right from wrong. You comforted me when I cried. You celebrated with me when I rejoiced.

Every moment with you is special. I adore the way you ‘fight’ the hose. I marvel at how you take a bow. I cherish your soft butterfly kisses. I appreciate how you listen to me. I love that you lay next to me until I fall asleep. I admire the way you daintily eat ice cream cones. I enjoy how you sit on my feet and puff your chest out with pride.

I hope you know that you mean the world to me. You are my baby, and you are my best friend, now and forever. I love you.

Carey (Mom)
