A letter to my Little Man

Dear My Little Man, My Dark Vader:

I will never forget the day that we met. You were four months old and I was babysitting you for my brother. You were a surprise to me because I had only expected to see his poodle, Tootsie, but yet another little fluffy black dog was there too! You had such big brown eyes and a mean bark for someone that only weighed five pounds. I remember the moment I fell in love with you, when you tripped down the last step on the back porch and the right side of your face went into a mud puddle. You looked up at me as if to say, ‘Hey, don’t worry I’m ok!’ with that big smile of yours, your left ear pointed up and your right one soaked in mud. In that moment I knew we were so much alike, both clumsy and fun.
That weekend I alternated names between Puppy, Brownie, Blacky and eventually settled on Dark Vader because Grandma thought you had a vicious bark and didn’t realize that the character’s name was actually Darth Vader. A few weeks later my brother decided he couldn’t look after you anymore and was going to bring you to the pound. Thankfully Grandma knew I loved you and took you for me! Our first year together was full of fun times and us looking after each other.

I remember when you got sick on New Years and I took three days off work to nurse you back to health, I remember you taking care of me for months when I got sick and everyone was afraid to visit me because I was contagious. I remember the first time you played in the leaves when I raked them and the time the wind was so strong outside it blew you over while you were going potty!
I am grateful for everything that you have taught me and how proud you look to be my little man. You have taught me that there is always time for a nap or park break. You have taught me that we should volunteer our time and give back to those animals less fortunate than us. Most importantly you have taught me to be comfortable with who I am because you love me so much and how to love others with abandon. It is said that there is a soul mate out there for everyone and I know that we have found each other. I love you more than anything, more and more each day.

Love always,
Your Soul Mate, Your Mommy
