Dear My Everything,

Dearest Summer,

My life would not be the same without you. When I was 10 and we brought you home from the shelter, we got in the car and you sat down next to me and rested your head on my shoulder. That was it. We were inseparable. I walked you every morning before school, and threw the ball for you for hours after school. We’ve spent so much time together that I’m pretty confident you understand most of what I say. Leaving you was the hardest part of college, and my dorm room was plastered with dozens of pictures of you.

I’ve never known a more pure soul. You take care of us all. You make sure everyone in the house is clean, giving baths even to the cat, the guinea pig, and the rat. You are the perfect hostess, always seeing guests to the front door. You make sure the pool vacuum stays in the pool, because who knows what would happen to us if it got out. You know exactly when I need your head in my lap. When I take you to work at the animal hospital and there is an emergency, you go the people who are suffering most, give them a hug, and make them smile. Our love for each other makes me want to care for animals for the rest of my life, and help them live great lives filled with the kind of happiness only a dog knows. You’ve seen me through middle school, high school, and college graduations, and I can only hope that you can see me finish veterinary school, and know that it’s for you.

With all the love in the world,

Your Girl
