A Christmas Gift

In December of 2006, my family was hit with the death of my father-in-law on December 4, then the death of my brother-in-law, 13 days later. We were devastated and there was such an overwhelming sadness in our home.

I have a strict, adopt from shelters only policy, but one day we were outside of a Wal-Mart and I witnessed a lady selling baby Chihuahuas out of the back of her car. We were not looking for a dog, but I assume that we needed her, more than she needed us. She was tiny and I was later informed by the vet, that she appeared to be younger than 8 weeks. We took her home and prepared her as a surprise for our 2 young daughters. Abby provided sheer joy to my kids, followed by running and playing that lasted for hours.

I could not love you more, if you were one of my own children. You brought happiness to such a sad time, and put smiles on many faces, where there had been only tears. While I know that you can never replace the loss of a loved one, you made it more tolerable.

I love you more than you will ever know, because you brought the unconditional love, that only a dog can.

I will always love and adore you, even when it becomes time to make hard decisions. I will be there to help you with the determination and grace that you have shown my family.
